When you decide to use press releases as a means of promotion for your online business, you could either decide to carry out the campaign by yourself or you could decide to enlist the services of a SEO firm. While using the services of a professional firm may be advisable, you can still have a successful campaign when doing it yourself. One of the things that greatly determine the success of your promotion efforts is how you write your press releases. Writing press releases requires some measure of skill and tact since these are not like any other general Internet articles. So how should they be written?

When writing press releases, there are certain things that you should put in mind to ensure that you come up with compelling pieces that will be effective for promoting your business. These are:

* Have a story to tell – before you start writing press releases you must have a topic in mind. If you are writing about a certain product that you are launching or want to promote you should ensure that you have all your facts regarding it. What’s more, your topic or angle should be one that will be compelling to those whom the press release is targeted.

* Think and write like a journalist – this simply means that you should write a piece that an editor will not hesitate to publish. If possible make sure you answer at least three of the five Ws (who, when, what, where and why). Also ensure that your title is one that is catchy and that will easily stand out and hold the reader’s attention. As for the paragraphs they should be short and complete with each conclusively addressing an issue.

* Use the correct format – press releases require writing in a particular format and to ensure that it is actually published when you submit it you must write them in the correct format. Generally, the flow is as follows; a title, a simple contact, a sub heading, one leading paragraph acting as an introduction, one or more main paragraphs, a final paragraph and then full contact details. This is the general format but some media outlets may have additional requirements in terms of format. Ensure that you use the right format for each media outlet you expect to use.

* Keep it short – when writing press releases always ensure that you keep your writing precise and avoid excessive wording. This is because if it is too long then people will probably not have enough attention to read it all. Therefore, keep it as interesting as possible but also short and to the point.
