Web banners (or banner ads) are online advertising tools that are delivered to the Internet by ad servers. These ads are embedded in Web pages and their power pay for every click with part of the money going to the website owner. The first banner ad was used by HotWired in its website in 1994. The ad measured 468 x 60 pixels and it was bought by AT&T. There are several reasons for the popularity of banner marketing.

1. Increased Web traffic – these ads are advantageous in that they increase traffic to your website, which in turn leads to greater ROI or return on investment. These ads lead to brand awareness, they enable you to pass your notifications across, they help spread ideas, and they help you sell products and services. You are able to attract a global audience since the Internet does not have geographic or national borders.

2. Targeted audience – consider doing banner advertising because you will get a targeted audience. Only those who are interested in what you have to offer will click on your ads, meaning you get greater ROI compared to other advertising methods.

Easy tracking – consider doing banner ad marketing because these ads are easy to track since you could calculate the click through rate by dividing the number of clickthroughs by the number of impressions. This is important because you will know about the effectiveness of your advertising campaign and you will then be able to take the appropriate action.

5. SEO advantage – banner ad marketing is better than SEO (search engine optimization) because Web users need to know the name of your brand or a related keyword or keyword phrase for them to find you with SEO. With these ads, all that Web users need to do is click on the ads.

6. Just one click away – this is one of the easiest online advertising methods because you will only be one click away. There is no need to write and distribute articles or to generate a mailing list with banner ads, all you need to do is place the ads and wait for the results.

There are different types of banner ads, meaning there is something for you whatever your particular requirements and specific circumstances are. Most of these ads are placed on top of Web pages, meaning they are easily visible and therefore very effective.
