As a potential Yahoo!-Microsoft deal keeps busy fingers tap-tap-tapping, it’s unclear that a merger would have that much impact in the realm of search. According to Hitwise, Google still got the lion’s share of search in May, taking 68.29% of the U.S. market, while Yahoo! trailed far behind with 19.95% and MSN with 5.89%. Together, the Yahoo-Microsoft share dropped 2.66% over May 2007. Microsoft must be hoping that the agreement with HP to make Windows Live Search the default on PCs shipped by HP will cause an uptick in those numbers.

Those who closely follow trends in Internet marketing are taking a wait-and-see attitude.
