If you already have a website in place then you may have heard of or even worked with website linking, also known as link building and along with several other names. However, if you are new to the world of owning your own website on the Internet, then you may not be fully aware of what exactly website linking is or how it can benefit you and your search engine ranking. Today, there are a number of great things that you can do to get your website listed higher up in the search engine results, and the proper links can certainly help to not only get you there but also help to keep you there.
Once you start to think about website linking, you will definitely see how it can work to your advantage as a website owner. In a nutshell, when you have a website, the more sites there are that have links back to your website, the more traffic you will end up seeing. This definitely works to your advantage because it is almost like having a whole lot of advertising that is completely free. As a way to pay the other website owners back, you link to them and so on, almost forming a type of partnership.
There are many things that you can do to promote your website, but it goes without saying that a website that dabbles in website linking is going to end up in higher rankings on the search engines that one who does not. This is the case even if the websites are almost exactly alike. You will see a difference like this because all of the major search engines both recognize and respect the fine art of website linking. If you have an affiliate section or a links page on your website and your competition does not, then you may just be higher up than them on the search rankings.
When you are a website owner who takes advantage of an incredible online marketing campaign that includes everything from website linking to banner advertising and more, then the chances are really wonderful that you will be able to enjoy watching your website hit the ranks that you have been dreaming of in the search engines. It may not happen overnight, but any website with a top page ranking is sure to tell you that website linking helped them monumentally over time to get where they are today. You too can do the same with your website, you just have to give it a try.

If you have a website that you take care of, then the chances are really good that you have heard of web linking. However, if you are not exactly familiar with how this works, the chances are very good that you will not get the kind of success that you would hope for from your online marketing campaign. At the same time, you do not necessarily need to be a search engine wizard in order to get the traffic that you are longing for. All you really need is a decent online strategy along with the knowledge of how links can work in your favor.
As you get started with web linking, you need to find the right kind of websites to use when it comes to what are called link backs. If you think about it, these websites are going to be linked to yours so it is very important that you do some research on them before you begin. Pick and choose only the websites who have a great reputation and make sure that they have content that is on the same level as you provide on your website.
Do you have a strong website where you would like to offer websites to partner up with you and share links? If so, then this is a great opportunity for you to set up a dedicated section on your website where you can offer such a web linking opportunity. Visitors can read about how they can share links with you, whether it is with traditional links, banner advertisements and so on.
As you learn about web linking, the chances are very good that you will hear terms such as back linking or link popularity. The more reputable websites there are out there that point to your website, the higher your website should be able to climb in the search engine rankings. These links along with the type of content that you have on your website or blog will really help to boost the popularity of your website.
If at any time in your web linking journey you find yourself unsure of what your next plan of attack should be, you can always look to one of the online marketing firms out there who specialize in this area. After all, you are not expected to know absolutely everything about keyword articles, search engine optimization tools, web linking or any of the other online marketing strategies that are out there. These companies pride themselves on knowing all of the latest online trends and have the ability to get your website moving up in terms of search engine results.

Web links are pretty valuable things nowadays - at least, the right links are. Link building is one of the core SEO activities, and while some sites create hundreds of links a day and still rank poorly, others are getting traffic, conversions, and ultimately profits through techniques that have nothing to do with search engines! The Internet exists for people to read, and if your link piques their interest, they will come to your site and read it. Here are several methods for getting web links that instantly endear people to your site … even if they don’t matter a lick to the search engines.
Blog commenting
The spammer’s, or uninterested link-builder’s, version of blog commenting is quite different to commenting for humans. Some guidelines for blog commenting for humans include:
* Choosing well-trafficked blogs within your niche to comment on
* Being one of the first to comment
* ONLY commenting when you have something useful or very interesting to add to the conversation. Congratulating the author on their post, fuzzy and feelgood as it is, isn’t going to encourage people to click your link.
Guest posting on blogs
Often the author link of a guest post is dofollow - so guest posts are extremely valuable. However, one essential requirement of guest posting is that you have an interesting, niche-focused, well-trafficked blog yourself. Build up a relationship with your targeted bloggers by commenting on their blogs and subscribing, and try writing your guest post before asking if anyone will publish it.
Feedback and reviews
There are a hundred thousand review sites (or the number is getting close, anyway!). Many of these have nofollow links, but a positive review on one or more of these sites could be one of the most valuable human-oriented links you have. A customer that already feels good about your site is much more likely to purchase.
Forum Posting
Forums are a mixed bag - some follow, some don’t. But you can be sure that if you can comprehensively answer a person’s question, also offering follow-up advice when they have tried your solution, that human traffic and PR love will follow from the web links in your signature.

Do a quick Google and you’ll find millions of pages offering advice on website linking for new pages and sites. You’ll find advice on how to get free links, how to get a hundred links in a day, and how to build your link popularity to bursting point. One little deal breaker that many forget to mention is the ‘nofollow factor’ - a little script in the source code that can waste weeks of your time. We look at the nofollow factor in website linking.
The rel=nofollow tag became popular years ago, when search engine optimizers realized that blog commenting, and other forums such as Yahoo Answers, Google Groups and the like, offered a free and relatively quick source of backlinks. In order to ‘purify’ their search results, and give better placement to sites that actually offered more value to readers (not only those that spent the most time getting free backlinks), they introduced the nofollow tag.
The nofollow tag basically tells a search engine spider crawling the site to ignore the link to your website in its link analysis. Actual humans can still click it (which means that nofollow links are not totally worthless), but in terms of organic SEO, nofollow created a big hurdle for search engine optimizers to jump.
Rel=nofollow is now the default setting on all Wordpress and Typepad blogs - a blog owner actually has to make the effort to remove the nofollow tags from his blog. While removing these tags and promoting your blog as a dofollow blog will get more traffic (through commenters looking for Link Love), it will also get you plenty of spam comments. For bloggers that simply don’t have the time to do the manual filtering, leaving the nofollow tag there makes good time sense.
For those that are investigating link building strategies, be aware that the following forums usually include the nofollow tag by default. It is also worth checking the source code of any page that you are looking for links on (just by right clicking), to make sure that you aren’t wasting your time when it comes to link building!
* Wordpress and Typepad blogs are nofollow by default. Many other blogs are also nofollow.
* Yahoo Answers, Google Groups, Wikianswers and other answering forums are usually nofollow
* Wikipedia and other user-generated content directories are often nofollow.
* Social bookmarking services like Digg and Delicious often use the nofollow tag by default
* Craigslist uses the nofollow tag - classifieds posted on Craigslist do not automatically help your website linking campaign.

The introduction of the nofollow tag as default changed the landscape of web site linking as we knew it. While some bloggers have modified their source code to pass link love and encourage traffic and comments, many free and easy places to leave your link on the net are now tainted by the nofollow phenomenon. If you are looking for links, we look at which activities will not only get you human traffic, but also pass the link juice to your site.
Dofollow blog commenting
There are plenty of dofollow blog lists available on the Internet, as well as specific search engines that index dofollow blogs so you can easily looks for posts related to your niche. Be aware that to have value, your comment should be on a page that is not already heavily commented (less than thirty outbound links), and one with good Pagerank.
Linkbait content on both blogs and websites
Linkbait content is comprehensive, high-value information that a lot of people will be looking for, or interested in. It may also be controversial opinions or comments. The purpose of linkbait content is to have other blogs link to it, creating following inbound links for you. It is easier to post linkbait content on blogs than websites - if you want to keep your actual site streamlined, start a blog within it.
Product testimonials
If you buy an item, particularly a high-end one, from a website, contact the owners and offer to write a testimonial for their service and product - providing that they dofollow your website link in your customer name.
Ensure your site is accessible and standards-compliant
Government and educational sites are more likely to link to website that have been validated as complying with set standards. You can also submit your site to directories that list W3C compliant and other standard-frameworks compliant sites.
Creating free WordPress templates, CSS designs, or MySpace skins
You can include a hidden link to your website in the source code of each of these. The better quality they are, the more likely they will be widely reproduced around the web, building your site’s Google reputation.
Hold a contest
This will get web site linking from both blogs and editorial sites, which have a much higher authority in Google’s eyes. You will need to make the prize worthwhile, and skill-based contests are often more valuable than chance-based ones. Ask people to complete an activity or write a review, rather than just saying the winner will be drawn out of a barrel.

Once you have a solid foundation for your SEO campaign, link building is going to be most of your ongoing work. If you can make more money using your time for something you specialize in, rather than rote work (that would be most of us, then), hiring a link building service makes good financial sense. Here are the main considerations for choosing a good link building service:
1. New Methods - The face of SEO changes as rapidly as Imelda Marcos’. Techniques that worked well several years ago can now get you blacklisted in Google - make sure your company has recent testimonials.
2. Diversity of Strategy - Link building for longevity of results means using different methods - article marketing, press releases, directory submissions, and linkbaiting should be featured in any good link builder’s repertoire.
3. White Hat Techniques - This goes without saying (yes, I know I just said it!). Your link building service should use white hat techniques only.
4. Reputation - Google the company name that you are thinking of using, and look beyond the first two results pages for information on them. Look them up on review sites and forums, the place where people most often air grievances. You want their record to be mostly clean, at least.
5. Response time - Many companies have a poor response time. Even extremely busy companies should have the time to respond quickly to let you know that they’ll answer your query in the near future. If they are slow even on the sales end of the customer continuum, they will be more difficult to deal with.
6. Testimonials - Look for customer testimonials on site, and see that the language contained in them is natural … not marketing speak.
7. Own site backlinks - Try checking the links to a company’s own site through Google or Yahoo, or a link popularity checking SEO tool available now.
8. Flexible pricing - A good link building service will give you several pricing options, rather than a flat hourly rate. Look for those that are paid for results, as well as time spent.
9. Ability to Meet Expectations - If you have any expectations in terms of number of links or quality of links when it comes to your link building service, tell them about them. Those that are not defensive, and are confident about meeting those targets or will tell you exactly why they are unrealistic, are those you should trust with your money.
10. Relationship - Go with a link building service where you get along with your sales rep or personal ‘builder’.

We’ve become so accustomed to dealing with people half a globe away, via the magic of the Internet that we sometimes fail to see the value in what is under our feet. Web linking is one of the arenas where many businesses could benefit from a more local, rather than global, view.
Link popularity is one of the main drivers of a web page’s off-site SEO efforts. This is the main reason that you’ll be looking at getting links from local business websites, however, there is more than just sheer numbers to the benefits of a local view of link building. Geotargeting is an ever-more important part of an SEO strategy, and having links from pages relevant to your local area will help boost your rankings for geotargeted searches immeasurably.
So how do you get local links?
* Your chamber of commerce - These exist to co-promote businesses in the area, and will usually be more than happy to link to you. That is the very purpose of their existence!
* City-wide resources - In larger cities these will probably be more useful, as they will be more widely trafficked and therefore have a higher PageRank. Do a search only containing your city name to help you find these directories. Another benefit of these is that you can usually add your link and business information simply and quickly, without developing the relationship that is usually needed for a link exchange.
* Local library - Libraries are supposed to be the holders of all information … that information should include your website! Many library websites have local business directories within them. These domains will usually have a .gov on the end - extremely valuable in calculating your SERP ranking.
* State government resources - Spend some time looking around your state government website, seeing if there are any appropriate places to add your website link. When you ask for a link, try to make human contact in the first instance. It is much easier for people to be dismissive of emails, and much harder to come up with a good reason not to link to your site when talking to you in person.
* Business partners - Your manufacturers, suppliers and partners may be willing to link to your site. Check out which of their sites already have pages that could easily do this. Set up a ‘Recommended Businesses’ page on your own site, so that you can easily offer web linking exchanges.

Over the past several years, more and more online business owners have discovered the importance of using web links as a way of boosting sales. Simply put, back links are links placed on another person’s website or blog site. The name comes from the link directing people back to a different website, i.e., your site. As an example, let us say you were looking at blogs that had a connection to the type of service your website offers. All you would need to do is provide a comment on the blog, which would include your website’s URL. With this, the blog now has a back link on their site, which allows people to click back to your site, thus helping to increase traffic and sales.
Back links are very important in getting your website noticed. Remember, the large, most powerful search engines work by ranking a website on keywords and phrases. These search engines will look at websites with lots of back links as being a place of importance, a site that knows what it is talking about, therefore making it the expert. This means that as back links are added, your website would begin to rank higher so it now becomes much easier for people to find when conducting a search.
Yes, creating and using back links takes work but ultimately, it is worth it. Best of all, the traffic that comes to your online business costs you nothing. The great thing about using back links is that you can use article directories whereby you would be allowed to add a simple resource box at the end of the article, which would include the website’s name, as well as the back link. The more articles that can be submitted to directories that have back links the more visibility the site will receive.
Back links are great in that they help to increase traffic but they also allow you the opportunity to provide readers with helpful information within the article that helps them gain confidence in your company. The key in making back links work to your advantage is to locate directories that have a high number of readers and then start posting. With thousands upon thousands of directories from which to choose, the prospects associated with back links are very exciting.

Having questions about web links is quite common. While linking can be a substantial tool in building a successful website, with so many dynamics, it can also be a little overwhelming at first. One controversial subject has to do with using submission software and/or services. Some web owners believe this is a great means of website promotion but more and more think search engine indexing can be done in a more efficient and effective manner.
The downside to software and services is that many of the larger, more powerful search engines will discover this and actually ban your site. Although it takes more time and effort, you will discover that going through a manual submission process is far better. The result is watching your online business being indexed by search engines quickly, which in turn increases more traffic. Just imagine having web links on Google, Yahoo, and other larger sites.
Another huge means of building an online business is by using web links, which can be done along with manual submission processes. For instance, you could visit or join any number of online forums where people discuss the type of business you have. The key here is not to announce your product or service, but to add a signature with a link to your site so when you sign the forum, you immediately have exposure while also being able to answer questions and provide helpful information to readers.
Web links are also very useful when it comes to article marketing. Keep in mind that you can build traffic to your website with a simple, 500-word article, which has a clean resource box at the end. Again, you are not pushing information onto the reader but providing him or her with a guide to your site through web links so that person can gain more information by clicking on the link that goes to your online business.
An interesting means of using web links that many people overlook has to do with sites such as eBay, Amazon, and Craigs List. These sites are auction/classified sites whereby a buyer and seller come together so a purchase can be completed. However, by adding a simple signature and web links, you have again provided direct information that would take potential buyers to your site. The result is quite substantial and should never be forgotten.
Finally, web links can help grow your online business using sites that let you post videos such as YouTube. There are millions of people who use YouTube and similar sites merely as entertainment, but others find many of the videos informative. For this reason, you might consider creating some type of educational video pertaining to the product or service you sell, which includes a very brief advertisement and web links.
