Only the Best: The Top Seven Homemade and Store-Bought Dog Toys
Dogs are one of the few animal species that continues to play throughout its life - humans are another. This is perhaps one of the reason that our two species have become such constant companions. And, as with humans, dogs and puppies depend on play to teach them social rules and life skills as well as allowing their brains downtime to relax and sort the information they've been acquiring. Sticks and grass quickly get boring though, and especially if you only have one dog in your family, puppy toys and later dog toys, will become especially necessary. Today we check out 15 of the best dog toys that you can either make at home or buy in the store, from the iconic Kong to good old chews and balls.
1. Frisbee
Dogs need a lot of running each day ... usually much more than humans do! A Frisbee is a fantastic toy for paw-eye coordination in your dog, and also allows you to give her the exercise she needs.
2. Kong
Rubber Kongs are one of the truly iconic dog toys and puppy toys. Dogs chew to clean their teeth ... and the rubber Kong is one of the only things they can chew over and over again without breaking. You can also pop peanut butter or fish paste right in the middle to keep your dog occupied for quite a while!
3. Coke bottle with dog biscuits
This cheap homemade dog toy doesn't last long ... but it doesn't have to! Put some dog biscuits inside a Coke bottle for your medium to large dog, and be impressed with how they figure out how to get them out!
4. Old rope
This is another homemade and inexpensive dog toy, but one that will stick around for quite a while longer than the Coke bottle. Tie a few knots in an old piece of rope to improvise a chew puppy toy. Just make sure it is thick enough not to be a choking hazard.
5. Bacon bubble machine
There are plenty of similarities between kids and dogs ... and it turns out that there are many similarities between kids' toys and puppy toys or dog toys also! Dogs of all ages love bubble machines ... if the bubbles are bacon scented. Intriguing!
6. Babble balls
These are another dog toy that is quite similar to something you'd find for the kids under the Christmas tree - Babble Balls make animal sounds when your puppy or dog breathes on them, walks past them, or nudges them.
7. Balls
It's best if you choose balls specifically designed for dogs ... manufacturers don't expect humans to constantly pick balls up in their teeth!
No matter which dog toys or puppy toys you think sounds best for your furry friend, make sure that you never offer anything made out of old clothes or shoes for them to play with, nothing that previously belonged to your kids or babies, and never use old shoes as dog toys!
