What You Should Know About Hunter Pocket Watches
Pocket watches have never really gone out of style among a certain demographic - specifically, those that value fine things - but over the past decade or so, they've come roaring back into high fashion. Antique pocket watches are hot collectors' items, but even new pocket watches are valued and treasured by those who love fine timepieces.
Hunter pocket watches are contained in a protective hinged case that is meant to keep the dial and the watch crystal from scratches and damage. These are the traditional antique pocket watch most people imagine - the watches that railroad conductors carried in the old-time movies, tucked into their vest pockets. The case is held closed by a spring catch that opens the case when you press on the winding stem.
Some pocket watches have the stem - or crown - at the 12 o'clock position and the hinge at the 3 o'clock position on the watch. These are known as Savonnete pocket watches. When the stem is at the 3 o'clock position and the hinge is at the 6 o'clock position - the bottom of the watch face - you have a Lepine watch.
While hunter pocket watches are often thought of as jewelry for fine gentlemen, many of them were made for wear by ladies of Victorian times, often as pendant watches. Ladies' pendant watches were often inset with gemstones and engraved with vines and flowers. Gentlemen's pocket watches were no less ornate, often lavished with elegant chasing and engraved coats of arms or family crests.
Hunter pocket watches were the signature accessory for gentlemen from the middle of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. These timepieces were often gifted to young men when they came of age, on the assumption that they were now old enough to be responsible for keeping their own time. A young man might receive a new pocket watch when he entered into business, and businesses often gave engraved pocket watches to employees upon their retirement to honor their loyalty and contribution to the company.
Today's pocket watches come in many of the same styles, including those that are reminiscent of the elegantly engraved and chased timepieces of a bygone day, but there are also many new styles that strike a decidedly modern tone. They're especially popular with kids who espouse a goth fashion aesthetic or enjoy dressing in steampunk style. Some modern watches are engraved or embellished with military insignia or with emblems of professions such as firefighting or with the caduceus of the medical profession.
Pocket watches make fine gifts for both young men and young women on any special occasion. While antique pocket watches can be pricey and often need restoration, there are many companies that make fine hunter watches for excellent prices. You can even find wholesale pocket watches online to make them more affordable as very special gifts.
