I live in two places - one busy and urban; the other is quiet and rural. My rural town of 3000 people sees an occasional home break-in. Robberies usually come in batches-teenagers running wild. My neighbor, the town historian, had some valuable old documents stolen from her farmhouse. But generally it's pretty quiet here. No one that I know of has a home security system.
But in the busy city it's a different story. Almost everyone has a home security system-or at least a sign for one. My next-door neighbor is an exception; she leaves her door open when she's away so her dog can go in and out, and she wonders why she gets robbed. Even the best home security system, like a Honeywell, won't work if you leave the door open!
I might as well tell you, the city I'm talking about is Houston, Texas. Now, that's a big city. You couldn't pay me to live there without a home security system. I've got two big dogs, and still I would be without an alarm and monitoring system. Give those dogs a bone, or even a scratch on the ears, and anyone could get into my house.
The hardest thing for me is the windows. I like to leave the windows open all the time. I don't like air-conditioning. Maybe there is a way to set up an alarm system with the windows open a little. I'll have to check with my company.
The company I use is great. It's a local company. I use local businesses whenever I can. I like to support the local economy, plus I like to deal with a local company because I know there's an actual person I can talk to if I have a question or a problem. The folks at this company even have a sense of humor, which is important to me because once in a while (well, maybe more than once in a while) I set off the alarm by mistake. They always laugh and tell me other people do it more often than I do. Nice people.
I really don't know much about the technical details of the security system I have. What I know is that for a very reasonable amount of money each month I get peace of mind knowing someone is looking out for my home. If the alarm goes off, the security company responds. Someone is monitoring my home.
Remember I said I live in two places? That's another reason the home security system is important to me. The last thing I want is to come into my house late at night after a long and tiring flight to find that someone has been in there. That happened to me once, before I had an alarm system, and that is about the worst feeling in the world.
I work hard taking care of other people's problems. I want the security of knowing someone is looking after my home when I'm away. And I have just that with my local Houston security company.
