When it comes to health and wellness, ideally every person would intuitively do everything necessary to maintain optimum well-being. They would eat the food their bodies require-in just the right quantity. When they are stressed physically, mentally, or emotionally, they would eat special foods or herbs that give them the extra boost they need. In this world, each person would exercise as needed for their age and their physique. Their vision would be strong, their hearing sharp, and their weight perfect. All their needs would be taken care of by the natural world.
But we don't live in such a world. In our world people can choose between nutritious food and junk food. They can easily overeat or not eat enough. The food they consume may or may not give them the nutrients they need. They can stress themselves and not take the time to consider what their bodies need to recover and maintain health. They can be sedentary or active. Each person has a choice. Often people want to make healthy choices but they don't know how. It's not intuitive. The natural world does not take care of our needs.
While society as a whole and many individuals have lost the instinctive knowledge of how best to take care of themselves, they have gained resources that can provide this knowledge. The Internet makes advanced medical knowledge available to anyone who wants it.
For example, numerous websites give natural, conventional, and alternative solutions to medical conditions and medications. They provide information on medical interactions, nutrient-depleting drugs, and illnesses. Recognizing that we may not get all the nutrients we need from the food we eat, websites offer suggestions for vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements. They provide practical solutions such as exercise plans, heart healthy recipes, diet plans for weight loss and diabetes, supplement selection guides, and menu planning.
Not too long ago it would have been difficult to find such information and products. We are fortunate that they are now readily available. Numerous online health vendors sell the supplements, vitamins, minerals and herbs to optimize your health and help prevent serious diseases.
Even the government recognizes the importance of preventive health. Agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health support research on conventional and alternative medicine. They disseminate information on disease prevention, including information about epidemics and diseases that threaten our individual and collective well-being.
We may not know which herbs to pick from the forest when we have a headache, but we do have access to both the information and the herbs. In our information society, we have the tools to find credible scientific health information to help us make informed decisions about our health. How we know and learn about self-care may be different now than it was hundreds of years ago, but the desire for good health remains, as do resources for fulfilling this desire. Whether we choose to seek out and follow the available guidance is up to us.
