The Proper GYN Questions Pave the Way for a Smooth Gynecologist Visit
It's no secret that women don't look forward to visiting the gynecologist. It's something most women dread but they know to be necessary to ensure good female health. To make visits a little more comfortable for you and your gynecologist, consider taking a list of GYN questions for your next appointment. Asking questions will help you understand what's going on in your body and what steps you can take to help live a happier, healthier life.
When to Ask
Ask GYN questions on every visit, but especially if you are experiencing pain or weird symptoms, including pelvic pain, frequent nausea before or during menstruation, lower abdominal pains, possible bladder pain, etc. You might also ask questions about your emotional needs as a female. You'd be surprised at how the female hormones in the body affect your emotions. If you're feeling very emotional all the time, or get stressed easily, you might possibly have a hormonal imbalance. Your gynecologist can test this to see if there's a problem, or can talk you through what could possibly be triggering your emotional outbreaks.
What GYN Questions to Ask
GYN questions may include inquiries about a variety of subjects related to your personal needs or GYN information in general. If you've been trying to get pregnant for a while with no success, you'll want to ask questions about infertility. Also, ask about the possibility of ovarian cysts, which may indicate an underlying reproductive problem. Ovarian cysts must be detected through an exam, because most women who have them don't realize it. On the flipside, if you want to prevent getting pregnant, speak with your gynecologist about tubal ligation, which is the severing of the fallopian tubes often referred to as "having your tubes tied." Having a hysterectomy may be an option if you wish to never get pregnant again and are also experiencing ongoing female organ health problems.
If you often have heavy bleeding (including clots) and pain during menstruation, or have pressure in the abdomen, inquire about fibroids. Fibroids affect many women and vary in severity and size. They must be detected through examination, and will often go unnoticed until spotted while undergoing other treatments or exams.
If you will be undergoing surgery soon, ask your gynecologist about laparoscopy, which is a surgical procedure in which the doctor creates a small incision in the abdominal wall and uses a lighted tube to view the female pelvic organs or abdominal organs. This procedure is often used to collect tissue samples for biopsies.
Educate Yourself
Your best defense against potential female health issues is to educate yourself. Use Internet GYN resources to find out information about female conditions, and put together a list of GYN questions that pertain to your needs. You can buy helpful e-books with general GYN questions as well as those focused on particular subjects such as ovarian cysts, tubular ligation, fibroids, etc.
Even if you're a male, perhaps you want to know more about a certain female condition that's plaguing your wife, mother or daughter. E-books on the subject can help you understand what's going on and what GYN questions to ask during their next visit.
Knowing what GYN questions to ask can ease your mind and will ensure that you or your loved one gets the best possible gynecological care.
