If you don't have a Sony PSP, you may not know that it is one of the most entertaining, remarkable gaming and multimedia devices ever. It combines Sony style with incredible power, utility and versatility. It's so full of new technology that people are discovering ever more new uses for the device, uses that even Sony itself never anticipated. While originally conceived primarily as a handheld gaming machine, the PSP can do so much more. It's also a photo viewer, a video player, a web browser, a music player and a handheld computer. No wonder then that PSP downloads are a hot topic.
When I first got my PSP I marveled at its high tech look, its gorgeous screen, its sophisticated controls, and its overall sex appeal. The games themselves, frankly, were a bit disappointing. Sony had run all those promo previews that showed a PSP with a special version of Gran Turismo 4, my favorite game ever. Unfortunately, it's years later and Gran Turismo is still not available. On the other hand, the PSP is an excellent movie player. Originally I didn't think a lot of movies would be available on the little UMD discs the PSP uses, but I was wrong. I also love to use the PSP as a photo viewer and have hundreds of my favorite pictures stored on it.
Despite the lack of blockbuster games, worldwide sales of the Sony PSP are approaching 50 million. That's because PSP games, PSP music, PSP movies, and all sorts of PSP software are increasingly available from a variety of sources. The situation is not unlike that with the Apple iPhone where Apple tries to keep the device locked and under control whereas a vibrant develop community has other ideas. A large number of iPhones are unlocked and run all sorts of software even though Apple officially doesn't allow it and tries to prevent it with its system software. The situation is similar with the PSP.
There is, of course, always a fine line between what is legal and what is not. Most people have a good idea of what they should be doing and what not, but there are many gray areas where companies and publishers have one idea and users another. No one argues that you can't sell a book or give it away because, after all, once you give it away you no longer have the book. It's the same with a music CD or a video DVD. However, with electronic copies it's a different thing because those can be downloaded and stored. It's clearly an issue that needs to be solved fairly for both sides.
In the meantime, there are probably tens of thousands of PSP downloads out there, including games, videos, pictures, wallpaper, cheats, utilities, TV shows and all sorts of software made accessible by the homebrew community. There are upgrades and downgrades, enablers, custom firmware, patches, add-ons and loaders. There are also PSP emulators that let you run games for other system on the PSP. The possibilities are pretty much endless.
In the PSP, Sony has given us an incredible, and amazingly affordable, multimedia and gaming platform. There are increasingly sophisticated PSP games, tons of PSP content, and a huge number of PSP downloads. The PSP is a wonderfully entertaining and challenging device, and one that will never, ever leave you bored.
