Must-Have Tips: How I Learned To Be a More Organized Grocery Shopper

If you've ever returned home from the grocery store exhausted, wondering where in the world your afternoon went, I can totally relate! I'd make a quick grocery list on a scrap piece of paper on my way out the door and return home with lots of groceries. When it would come time to cook I'd realize I had forgotten the most important item! Other items I'd get would sit in the refrigerator taking up valuable space until I'd search through food recipes looking for something to make with it, or worse, I'd throw it away. Talk about a waste of food and money! Not only did I waste money on buying unwanted food, but I'd pay full price because I didn't use grocery coupons!

Well, all of this stopped shortly after I became friends with a new co-worker, Annie. Annie is a super organized person and I have learned a lot from her about a lot of things; time saving meal preparation and grocery shopping are definitely two of them! Annie was going to the grocery store after work one day and she had brought her grocery coupon organizer into the office. She was planning on eating her lunch in the office since it was a rainy day, and she'd pull her needed coupons out while she ate. As we ate lunch together we talked about her system. She told me she also had a food recipe organizer that really worked well for her.

Since I was working two jobs, my spare time was very limited. I asked her if she'd help me plan a system that worked for me. She was more than happy to help me. The first thing Annie taught me was to be consistent as to when and when I go to the grocery store. Basically she said to plan grocery shopping into my day. Annie taught me to plan meals for the entire week and go through my food recipes to make a list of what I'd need. Once I had my list I'd go through the cabinets, pantry, and refrigerator to see what I already had, then I'd write down what I needed to purchase.

Annie taught me to make a detailed list of the groceries I buy regularly and the occasional items, too. She told me to take note in the grocery store how the aisles are laid out, put my shopping list in order by aisle, use coupons, and only buy what I need. Amazingly this works very well! It only took me two or three visits to the grocery store to have my grocery list completely accurate.

Sure, I sometimes have to stop by the grocery store for a few items, and yes, quite often my list is written on a scrap piece of paper. But by taking Annie's advice, by using my food recipe organizer, and my grocery coupon organizer I have a lot more spare time to spend with my family and I can experiment more with new recipes!
