Buying Event Tickets Online: What's Next?

When it comes to convenience, ordering event and concert tickets online can't be beat. If you've done your homework, you've ordered your tickets from a reputable site, preferably a broker collective site where you can source concert, movie, theater and event tickets from many different brokers. You've made sure that the tickets website is legitimate and that they've had few or no complaints from customers. And you've gone ahead and placed your order for your tickets - but you may still have questions about what happens next. Here's a quick rundown of what you can expect from most ticket broker sites after you place your order.

Confirmation Email

Shortly after you place your order, you'll receive a confirmation email from the ticket broker, sent to the email address you entered when you placed your order. Save the email in a place where you can find it if any problems arise. The confirmation email will contain all the information you need to confirm that you placed the order and to track your order if something goes wrong, along with contact information for the ticket seller.

Your email should contain your order number, details of the event for which you ordered tickets, contact information for the ticket seller and any other information you'll need to retrieve your tickets, as well as information like seat numbers and show times.

If you ordered your tickets from a broker collective site, the seller listed may not be the same as the name of the site you ordered from. Because many sites list tickets from multiple sellers, you may actually have bought your tickets from a local broker and you'll receive the contact information for that person or business.

If you've ordered your tickets 5 to 7 days in advance of the event, the ticket seller will usually ship out your tickets via FedEx within 24 hours of your order. In most cases, you'll receive a second email letting you know that your tickets have shipped and providing you with a tracking number so that you can check the progress of your tickets. If you don't receive that information within a day or so, you should contact the seller to confirm that your order was processed and your tickets shipped out on time.

If, on the other hand, you ordered your tickets on short notice, the seller will have made arrangements to get them to you on time for your event. Depending on the venue, you may even be able to print out your tickets from a secure website just as you'd print out boarding passes when you order travel tickets online. Other ticket brokers will ship your tickets next day delivery or make arrangements for you to pick them up at the venue. Make sure that you understand the details of how your tickets will be delivered before you actually make the payment for them.

The third possibility, especially when you're ordering tickets for a major event, is that you ordered your tickets months in advance. In that case, you'll get your confirmation email, but in most cases, your actual tickets won't ship out to you until about two weeks before the event. As long as your order was confirmed, you don't have to worry about them arriving in time for your event.

If you want to have your tickets delivered to an address other than the one on the credit card with which you made a payment, you'll probably have to fax your photo ID and the credit card you ordered with to the ticket broker. This is a measure for your protection - it helps prevent fraud by catching folks who are using other people's credit cards to order concert or sports tickets without permission. If the tickets are being shipped to the address on the credit card, you'll still have to be there to accept the package and sign for it.
