Think for a moment about about how important labels are? Look around yourself and see just how many things are labeled. It's almost everything. Labels are on products, items, magazines, and just about anything else. Without labels we'd be completely lost. In fact, labels are so important in our lives that we wouldn't even get along without the custom label most of us make or order and stick on things.
Have you noticed that virtually every product you buy has a bar code on it? There are dozens of different bar code types, but they are all designed to do one thing: provide product information that can be read in an instance with a bar code reader. Without bar codes on food labels and product packaging, modern super markets and department stores as we know them could not exist. Checkout would take forever, and modern inventory and reorder systems would be impossible. The beauty of bar codes is that while they make no sense to human eyes, machines can read them with 100% accuracy.
As Americans, we like to tell the world (or our neighbors or anyone else) how we feel. There's probably not another place in the world with as many bumper stickers, decals, tags of all kinds, and T-shirts and jackets with slogans and graphics on them. If we have something to say, we say it, loud and clear, and it's all basically labels. We use stickers on our cars to tell the world how we voted or what laws we support or oppose. We use T-shirt to express a sense of humor, raise a few eye browse, or draw a bit of attention.
If we need to mail things, chances are we're printing labels either with a laser printer or an inkjet, and those labels may have our return address on them, or perhaps a company logo or slogan. If we sell products, each will probably have its own label, and sometimes designing a catchy, informative label is a major task. We also may have to follow rules and regulations and place warning labels on products, doors, equipment and other things. Those labels may have to be designed and printed in a certain way.
Labels can be made of paper, plastic, cardboard, vinyl, fabric or some other material. Some labels must be sewn or stitched on; some have adhesive on them and must be peeled off before they can be applied. Some labels are blank and we just write on them by hand. Or we use a machine that makes labels we can use to mark things like notebook computer or cell phone power supplies.
The point is, without labels our society could barely function, if at all. We don't notice labels much, but they are very important. Making sure we can make the labels we need in our lives and businesses quickly, inexpensively and efficiently is more important than we think. Sit down sometime and think of all the custom labels you need and use every day. Or just, for the sake of it, count all the labels in your office or kitchen. You'll be surprised how many there are.
