Dedicated Web Hosting Types and the Advantages of Each
In the world of web hosting, one size doesn't fit all. When choosing a web hosting package, it's important to choose the best hosting packages and types for your business. Many smaller and medium size companies choose shared web hosting of some kind, but if you're running an enterprise level website, shared hosting may not provide the security and the resources that you need for your websites. If your website is mission-critical, and you anticipate high traffic, then you should be looking at dedicated web hosting.
Dedicated Web Hosting
In dedicated web hosting, your website will be the only one on the server. This is considerably more expensive than shared hosting because the owner of the server gives up the ability to put more websites and make more money from the server. With dedicated hosting, your website gets the benefits of all resources on the server. There are three types of dedicated web hosting - managed hosting, unmanaged hosting and collocated web hosting.
Managed Web Hosting
With managed hosting, the hosting company provides a knowledgeable person to deal with setting up your server and configuring everything correctly for you. It limits some of your choices, but is a good choice for a large business or enterprise website that would prefer not to hire someone specifically to manage the web servers. You'll usually work closely with a single account manager who will also be working with several other businesses. Your managed hosting account may come with a web design package or you may be able to work with a separate web design company. Your web hosting company will usually recommend the operating system for your server and take responsibility for doing regular backups, providing IT security and other important factors that affect the way your website works.
Unmanaged Web Hosting
Unmanaged hosting gives you complete control over the server, and is a viable option for a company that employs a person knowledgeable in configuration for web servers or works with a web design company that can manage the server for it. Unmanaged web hosting is generally less expensive on its face than managed hosting because you're not paying to have a management account with the hosting company.
With both managed and unmanaged hosting, you're actually leasing the computer that your website is being hosted on. The web hosting company retains ownership and may make changes to the computer without your knowledge.
Collocated Hosting
If you want to own your own server, then collocated hosting is the best choice for you. With collocated web hosting, you purchase the web server outright and pay the web hosting company for space in their server facility, as well as for doing any physical maintenance work on the computer. The web hosting company provides racks, cooling systems and anything else needed to provide the ideal environment to keep your server in top operating condition and preserve the data on it. They'll also be available to do things like hard resets and physical backups. Because you purchase the server, the up front costs are considerably more expensive than any other web hosting option, but your monthly costs will generally be lower for the same servers than other types of dedicated servers.
If you're considering moving from a shared server hosting situation, it's important to understand the benefits and drawbacks of each type of dedicated web hosting. Before you make your decision, sit down and talk with several web hosting companies and learn what each can offer you.
