Children's Clothing Has Come a Long Way

My one-year old nephew attended his uncle's wedding wearing black pants, a white button-down shirt, black vest, and printed red tie. He looked so adorable. Of course, he would be adorable without the fabulous outfit, but the clothes made him even more so.

If you have ever shopped for children's clothing, you know how fun it can be. If the children are very young it's best to leave them home. After all, choosing clothing for infants and toddlers is more about the adults than the kids.

By three, often even younger, many kids start having very definite opinions about their clothing. Children may mimic their parents' styles or they may develop their own unique fashion sense. It's common for children to change their preferred styles several times over the course of their young years.

Girls may tend to be more fashion conscious, but don't underestimate young boys' attention to what they wear. Many a lad has latched onto pajamas with a favorite action figure, proudly displayed his new shoes, or refused to wear a certain color.

Historically boys and girls wore the same clothing, usually smaller versions of their mothers' dresses, until about four to six years old, roughly the time of a boy's first haircut. After that, boys dressed in miniature men's clothing. Clothing made especially for children did not become popular until the late 18th century. Sailor and skeleton outfits and velvet Little Lord Fauntleroy suits were among the first specialized boys' clothing. At that time, clothing often reflected the social status or aspirations of the parents.

While children's clothing still has social implications, 21st century children tend to have more voice and more choice about what they wear. Formal attire has given way to casual clothing in all but the most formal events, except perhaps when it comes to school uniforms and religious services.

Modern children are fortunate in being able to wear clothing that fits their activities. This is not only a question of style, but also of durability. While children will outgrow their clothes before long, the fabric has to be sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of childhood adventures. For that reason, blue jeans are a popular choice for kids' pants.

Today, denim jeans have the dual distinction of being both rugged and stylish, but they weren't originally made for style. Jeans as we know them were first made in the 1850s, during the California gold rush. An enterprising German immigrant named Levi Strauss responded to the prospectors' need for strong, comfortable pants. The first Levi Strauss jeans were overalls. Levi Strauss & Company started using the now-familiar pocket stitch design and rivets in 1873. By then, denim fabric had been used for work pants for over 200 years, but it was the addition of the rivets that made "Levis" unique.

Children's clothing has come a long way in the last few centuries. Now many fashion designers design exclusively for children. Parents and children can choose clothing for style and practicality.
