Auto Insurance for High Risk Drivers: What You Need to Know
It isn't easy to buy auto insurance for high-risk drivers. There are a number of reasons you or a family member might be classified by providers as a "high risk driver." And once you are labeled in this class of drivers, you can just about bet that your rate quotes are going to be much higher than the average motorist!
What Does High Risk Mean?
There are some obvious and not-so-obvious reasons you might be considered a high-risk driver. One obvious reason is if you've had multiple accidents that were ruled to be your fault. This means you've hit and damaged another person's vehicle or you have had one or more one-car accidents for which you were responsible. Also, if you've ever received a DUI/DWI, then you will be classified as a high-risk driver.
Multiple speeding tickets, traffic violations and even being ticketed for driving without a seatbelt can push you over into the high-risk auto insurance category. One not-so-obvious reason that you might need auto insurance for high-risk drivers is if you have a medical condition that impairs your ability to drive. This can be a hearing or visual impairment, an injury to a leg or arm, or any handicap that might affect your driving ability. Certain medical conditions can cause you to need insurance for high-risk drivers, even if you've always kept a clean driving record.
If you're a new driver or a very young driver (age 16 to 24), then you can expect to pay more for car insurance. Other factors that providers might consider when assessing risk include your credit rating, the type of car you own (sports cars are considered high risk), if you live in a high crime neighborhood, if you have a long daily commute to work, and even any bad habits you might have (such as smoking).
Once you've determined that you are a high-risk driver, don't just accept the first rate quote you get. Never assume that every company is going to be just as high as the next. Do an online comparison for high-risk policies. Some insurers cater to high-risk drivers, such as young drivers or those with multiple accidents or a DUI or DWI. You can easily compare rates on the web by filling out one form with basic information about yourself and the vehicle you drive.
Once you compare a few companies that do offer auto insurance for high-risk drivers, ask each agent if there's anything you can do to lower your premium. Some offer discounts if you take a safe driver training class. Some offer discounts if you work to get your credit score back to a good rating. You might be able to save on teen insurance if your teen gets a good grade point average. The type of car you buy also makes a difference.
Check with your state's Department of Insurance as well to find out if there are any programs available to help motorists needing auto insurance for high-risk drivers. Some providers might offer special policies for certain circumstances if you're absolutely not able to find high-risk driver auto insurance. Check around and use the web to easily compare rates. You might be surprised at how much you can save by taking these easy steps!
