Women and Blogging: Giving Voice to Our Life Experience

Cat Stevens' 1972 album, "Catch Bull at Four," spoke to many women who are now in their early 50s. Although the album contained many memorable songs, "Can't Keep It In," spoke to me and many other young women of my generation with the line, "You've got so much to say, say what you mean, mean what you're thinking, and think anything." As girls and young women, we had so much to say, and yet most of us didn't have a vehicle to let our voices be heard. Indeed, although the feminist movement was gaining momentum, most of us were raised to not talk back, to avoid confrontation, and to keep our opinions to ourselves. So we wrote in our journals, had all-night conversations with our friends, and more often than not, didn't share our opinions beyond our inner circle.

In the time that has passed since Cat Stevens first sang those words, many of us have found our voices, have spoken passionately about our views, and have paved the way for our daughters and granddaughters to express themselves to the fullest. Yet, there's still so much to be said. Thanks to Web 2.0, we have a new tool that we can use to give voice to our thoughts, feelings, and opinions: blogging.

Blogging

In the unlikely event that you've never read a blog, a blog is essentially an online journal, soapbox, gathering place, or just about anything else you'd like it to be. With a blog, you can publish your writing, post photos, get feedback and comments, and generally expound on any subject that catches your interest.

Getting Started

If you're a woman who has something to say, launching a blog is easy. If you don't have a website, you can easily get a free account through any number of online blogging or social networking sites. If you do have a website, you can easily incorporate a blogging module (MovableType and WordPress are both popular). Either way, the blogging platforms are self-explanatory and take you step-by-step through the process of setting up your blog.

Why Women Should Blog

Although there are thousands of well-known women bloggers in cyberspace, your goal needn't be fame and fortune. Instead, your blog can simply be a mechanism to organize your thoughts, expound on issues you're passionate about, reflect on your experiences, brag about your kids' accomplishments, share your favorite recipes, or even share your recipe for success. You don't have to be a great writer (though running what you write through a spell checker isn't a bad idea); you just have to have something to say.

With some types of blogging software, you can even create a family blog and give posting rights to members of your family. Blogging is a great way to keep in touch with relatives near and far, is far easier then sending out news via email, and provides a compelling family historical record that will be treasured. Do keep in mind, though, that even non-publicized private blogs essentially become part of the public domain once they're on the Internet. In other words, use common sense when posting - just in case your boss or your ex-husband happens to come across it.

Blogging is helpful to women for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it is a gift we can give to ourselves - the time and space to record thoughts and experiences that are uniquely ours.
