LIMPOPO PROVINCE, SOUTH AFRICA - May 24, 2010 - Etango Game Lodge and
Private Game Reserve has a Black Giraffe - the game rangers have
dubbed him the "General" because of his huge size and exceptional
coloring. It is estimated that this magnificent bull reaches 6.2
meters in height when the accepted average of a bull giraffe is around
5.8m and his estimated weight is at around 1.5 tons. His most
exceptional feature though is his very unusual color as he is almost
black.
It has been suggested that his unusual coloring is a recessive sub
gene that has emerged. His sons have the same dark tendencies while
his daughters are of the normal giraffe coloring. "He could without a
doubt become a great tourist attraction, and as someone who has a very
good understanding of the wildlife industry, and understands that
money earned in the industry somehow always finds its way back to
wildlife, I reckon that the "General" could become Etango's ambassador
for other wildlife on the reserve. Not all reserves are in the
fortunate position to have such an exceptional animal. He truly is a
magnificent specimen, and I do hope that he will remain strong and
virile for many years to come," says Cobus Roos.
