Alarming Report Shows That Stress Is Driving Girls To Drugs,
Alcohol, and Into States Of Depression. Stress Expert Dr.
Kathleen Hall Offers Help With Innovative S.E.L.F.(TM) Program
CLARKESVILLE, GA - February 16, 2006 - A report released Thursday
by the Director of the White House Office of National Drug
Control Policy, "Seventeen" magazine, and teen medical experts
reveals that stress is driving girls into lethal behaviors that
put their lives at risk. The report reveals that in 2004, 1.5
million girls started using alcohol, 173,000 more than the number
of boys who started drinking. The report also shows there were
729,000 girls who started smoking cigarettes, 164,000 more than
boys. The number of girls starting to use marijuana was 675,000,
98,000 more than boys.
The report cites stress, such as peer pressure and the trials of
being an adolescent in a fast-paced society, as the culprit for
these and other dangerous behaviors in girls including eating
disorders, other illegal drug use, prescription drug misuse, and
low self esteem.
World-renowned stress expert, Dr. Kathleen Hall, Founder of The
Stress Institute (http://www.thestressinstitute.com) and Fellow
of the American Institute of Stress, has developed an innovative
program to help combat the crisis of low self esteem in girls.
Dr. Hall refers to low self esteem as "selficide" and her
solution is "S.E.L.F(TM) Care", which stands for Serenity,
Exercise, Love and Food - a program that blends science,
psychology, and spirituality to create daily practices for
improving one's mental health.
According to Dr. Hall, "Low self-esteem and depression are not
problems that can be solved by these girls alone. The mental
health of these young women is a family, community and societal
problem that must be addressed as a whole." Dr. Hall points out
that Dove has launched a campaign to directly attack this crisis
with America's girls called, "The Real Beauty Campaign". Their
research shows low self esteem is a crucial problem with girls
and that 92% of girls want to change their appearance.
"S.E.L.F.(TM) Care" and "selficide" are essential elements
discussed in Dr. Hall's new book "A Life In Balance: Nourishing
the Four Roots of True Happiness", which was published last
month.
