HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA - September 17, 2005 - Praise Unusual
announced today that it is offering crisis care to persons affected by
hurricane Katrina.
Effective September 21, 2005, anyone affected by the recent
catastrophe can call the telephone counseling line at Praise Unusual
and receive free counseling. Carol Benjamin, counselor and founder of
Praise Unusual says that this initiative was taken after viewing
troubling images of people in distress. She believes that in addition
to the influx of physical resources directed to the disaster area,
there is also need for response that is of a therapeutic nature.
"Given the nature of the disaster, and the widespread displacement
experienced, persons should have easy accessibility to agencies where
they can deal with their frustration, fears, guilt, anxiety and other
emotional upheavals," says Benjamin. "When people are dealing with
tragedy and distress of such magnitude, it is hardly an option to ask
them to visit a counseling center. They don't need further
discomfort. Help should find them where they are, and that is what
Praise Unusual endeavors to do."
By simply calling the telephone line, Katrina victims, including those
helpers who are traumatized by what they witness, can be connected to
someone who can help them reflect on their situation without fear or
judgment, and find helpful ways to deal with the hurt and uncertainty
and find courage to face the future.
Hours dedicated to Katrina victims are Wednesday to Saturday, from 6
pm to 1 am. One further thing that Praise Unusual has done is to
allow for anonymity. Persons benefiting from this free offer need not
reveal their identity.
