NEW CITY, NY - September 24, 2005 - Removal of the gallbladder, a
surgical procedure once associated with long hospital stays and
difficult recovery, now offers many patients a quick recovery and a
short hospital visit.
George Liberis, MD, Sc.D, FACS, a general surgeon in New City, New
York emphasizes the benefits of the latest gallbladder procedure
called laparoscopic cholecystectomy to his patients. During this
procedure, a laparoscope is used to see inside the patient's body and
remove the gallbladder with several small incisions. This differs
from an open cholecystectomy, where one large incision is made into
the abdomen. Healing is easier and usually much quicker with a
laparoscopic procedure.
"The procedure enables patients to return to work sooner, experience
less pain after surgery, and shorten their hospital stay in many
instances. The muscles of the abdomen are not cut during the procedure
as they are during an open cholecystectomy so recovery is often
quicker with less pain," states Dr. Liberis.
The 2005 Indian Journal of Gastroenterology (Issue 1, Volume 24) cites
a study, conducted between June 2002 and May 2003 of 55 patients with
symptomatic gallstone disease, which concluded that patients having
laparoscopic cholecystectomy versus open cholecystectomy showed less
impairment in pulmonary function after surgery. Pulmonary function is
how well the patient's lungs are functioning and transferring oxygen
into the blood. The study also revealed that a lower frequency of
atelectasis, a shrunken airless state of the lung, was present in
patients who had the laparoscopic surgery.
