LAKEVILLE, MN - June 28, 2006 - As the summer heats up,
fashionistas are adding sizzle to their summer wardrobes with
vintage Art Deco jewelry. Michelle Webb, owner of Michelle's
Vintage Jewelry (http://www.michellesvintagejewelry.com),
identified the trend early this year. "Vintage jewelry is always
in style, but 1920s-era pieces are definitely hot right now," she
said.
How do you spot Art Deco vintage jewelry? "Look for geometric
lines, symmetry, bold enamels, and Czech glass," said Webb.
"Flapper-length sautoir necklaces and rock crystals defined the
1920s, while Bakelite and chrome were popular in the 1930s." A
necklace, for example, might have faceted art glass beads in
contrasting colors, while a bracelet might have square cut
crystal links set in chromium or sterling.
According to Webb, vintage jewelry - whether Art Deco or
pieces from later eras - have a distinctive appearance that's
hard to miss. "The older pieces are made from a higher content
lead crystal, which gives them more sparkle," she said. "Just
like antique furniture develops a rich color, vintage jewelry
stands out because it has a special patina."
Webb, who has 3,000 pieces of vintage jewelry in her
inventory, encourages both casual and serious collectors to
showcase their pieces. "Vintage jewelry is the ultimate wearable
art," she said. "It's meant to be worn, not only as a fashion
statement, but also as a reflection of a woman's personality."
Webb wears pieces from her personal collection nearly every
day. "When I go to formal functions, I like to wear the glitzier
pieces, but I wear vintage jewelry with jeans all the time."
Webb not only expresses herself through her vintage jewelry, but
she also takes note of the attention it brings. "I used to
own an expensive collection of diamonds, yet I hear many more
comments and compliments when I wear my vintage pieces.
Contemporary diamonds are beautiful, but they just don't have the
artistic flair that vintage jewelry has."
This summer, that flair is sparkling and shimmering around the
necks and wrists of women around the country who have embraced
the renaissance of Art Deco vintage jewelry.
