SAN FRANCISCO, CA - December 2, 2009 - The San Francisco Academy
Orchestra announced today that it will partner with Calvary
Presbyterian Church in a performance of a "Sing-It-Yourself" Messiah,
which for many years was a celebration of the holiday season in San
Francisco by participating singers of all faiths and affiliations. The
performance of the Christmas portion and Hallelujah Chorus of G.F.
Handel's epic oratorio will be held on Sunday, December 20 at 4:00pm.
The presentation is open to all singers whether currently members of a
chorus or individuals seeking their yearly Messiah fix.

"This is a win-win situation," explained Academy Orchestra Music
Director, Andrei Gorbatenko. "We are excited to grant this
opportunity to San Francisco audiences while raising funds for a great
humanitarian cause. The concert, which will last approximately one
hour, will feature the audience, three vocal soloists, and Guest
Conductor Alden Gilchrist with the Calvary Choir."

Gilchrist is offering a free workshop to both the familiar and first-
time Messiah singers at Calvary Presbyterian Church the day before on
Saturday, December 19, from 10:00am - 12:00pm to provide both the
historical context of the piece and an opportunity to rehearse various
parts of the score. Gilchrist, who has served as Calvary's music
director for nearly 60 years, commented, "Calvary is delighted to take
part in such an important facet of San Francisco cultural life, and to
leverage the tradition into an exceptionally good cause, the support
of the SF Food Bank. We value our ongoing philanthropic partnership
with Andrei and hope to make this benefit concert a new tradition for
San Franciscans." This will be the seventh time that Gorbatenko and
Calvary Presbyterian Church have partnered for benefit concerts.

Immediately following the concert, the Academy Orchestra will be
hosting a festive holiday party at Calvary for attendees with wine,
appetizers, and a silent auction which will include musical
memorabilia, San Francisco Symphony tickets, vacation packages, wine,
gift certificates and perhaps some last minute stocking stuffers.
