SAN FRANCISCO, CA - April 19, 2006 - The San Francisco Student
Philharmonic (SFSP) has changed the name of their organization to
better reflect the caliber of their performances. The new San
Francisco Academy Orchestra aims to continue the fine musical
legacy established by the SFSP, but with a renewed sense of
purpose.
Each year, young adult career-bound musicians from all over the
Bay Area take the Academy Orchestra audition, paneled by the
orchestra's faculty of San Francisco Symphony members. Those
selected for the "Academy Experience" are given the opportunity
to rehearse and perform alongside and under the mentorship of the
Academy Faculty.
"The level of musicianship we have attained far exceeds the name
'Student Philharmonic'", explains music director Andrei
Gorbatenko. "Many of our orchestra members have already won
regional orchestra auditions, but still see how much they have to
gain from the chance to perform with San Francisco Symphony
members."
Acclaimed violinist Chee-Yun Kim, an upcoming soloist with the
Academy commented, "I'm very excited about my upcoming engagement
with the Academy Orchestra." Kim, while in town last month for
performances with the California Symphony, further explained,
"I've heard wonderful recordings of the orchestra! The name
Academy Orchestra much more clearly represents the quality of the
group."
Hear the San Francisco Academy Orchestra perform Schubert's 5th
Symphony and Mozart's timeless 4th Violin Concerto with virtuoso
violinist Chee-Yun Kim at Herbst Theatre, located at 401 Van
Ness, San Francisco, on Sunday May 28, 2006 at 2pm.
