DETROIT, MI - September 13, 2010 - Lakeside Investigations, a Michigan
Investigative Service warns employers in this time of high
unemployment, employers must complete background checks of applicants
to protect their bottom line.

As unemployment rates remain high, the frequency of pre-employment
background checks should increase, according to Detroit-Area private
investigator, Christopher Charow. Employers are more likely to see
resume fraud and employee theft when the economy declines and as it
begins to improve. "It's not unusual for someone who has been out of
work to lie about previous employment or steal from their new
employer," says Charow. "Some people act on the idea that 'Desperate
Times Call For Desperate Measures'. This is exactly why we warn our
company clients about the financial damage a new employee can bring.
A pre-employment background check policy could prevent that damage."

Last month, the U.S. Department of Labor released updated unemployment
numbers revealing that Michigan employers made 27,800 new hires in
July. Even with this increase Michigan still has the second highest
unemployment rate in the nation (13.1 percent). Now that more
employers are looking to hire, Charow tells companies that they must
establish a pre-employment background check policy. The policy should
require all potential new-hires to undergo the same series of
background checks, which could include credit, driving and criminal
background history providing the company protection from a
discrimination suit.

Employers must receive permission from the applicant in order to
complete the background checks. Additionally, if the employer chooses
not to hire the applicant because of the findings, they must share
those reasons with the individual per the Fair Credit Reporting Act
which covers these requirements in detail. "We respect the privacy of
our clients, so we can't reveal particulars of what we've seen, but
believe us when we say that employers WILL be surprised by what they
find on a background check," Charow said. "A credit check can prove
an applicant is a poor money manager, a driving record can prove
disregard for traffic laws and a criminal check can reveal
embezzlement charges and sex offenses among other offenses."

Private investigators like those at Lakeside Investigations can
complete one or all pre-employment screening for employers. Lakeside
will also conduct reference checks and confirm details of a resume or
application. Charow explained that many clients prefer to outsource
this function, since they are busy with their daily work and know that
if they complete the hiring process too quick or too carelessly they
may end up with an employee who has bad work habits. "Employers are
flooded with applications, which make it near impossible to examine
every resume carefully," he said. "We look to make sure the
applicants are honest, but we also make sure they're good workers.
We'll even call the applicant's elementary school if the client thinks
it will make their job easier."
