IRVINE, CA - June 21, 2005 - Counselors are called after tragic events
to help the traumatized. People go out of our way to properly refer to the
different racial and ethnic groups that make up this diverse country.
Congress has passed the Americans with Disabilities Act, so that the disabled can
be accommodated. America seems to be a society that is very
sensitive to other people's feelings, struggles and identities - some
would say to the extreme. Yet, the most requested and attended
corporate training events are those dealing with how to communicate
with tact and finesse, how to be diplomatic, how to handle difficult
people, and just how to get along better with people in general.
"Americans think they have this whole sensitivity area mastered," says
Catherine Bellizzi, President of SeminarInformation.com, a company
that lists over 300,000 training events on their website and who
tracks such trends. "But we still have a long way to go."
Almost every day, someone calls or visits SeminarInformation.com
asking about a communication seminar or enrolls for one on the
website. "Over the years, we have gotten many desperate calls from
managers looking for some sensitivity training for an otherwise-soon-
to-be-fired employee as well as from non-management employees asking
how they can diplomatically suggest such training to an ornery co-
worker," says Bellizzi. "And now in 2005, it is still the hot topic."
The reason? Bellizzi thinks it is simply a response to the high
tech/high touch trend that has grown since the 1980's. "The more
technological we become, the more we want to reconnect to our
'humanness'. We will e-mail the person in the next cubicle or even
text-message someone at the same conference table, but when it comes
to face-to-face interpersonal skills, we falter and we know we can do
better," says Bellizzi. That's where the seminar industry comes in.
"Just as seminars have been there with more and more computer classes
since the 1980's, they are here today with more and more interpersonal
training. It's been the Yin and Yang of the last twenty years and it
looks like it is here to stay."
