NEW YORK, NY — April 13, 2005 - In an age where corporate virtue is
high in demand and short on supply, one of the industry's standard
bearers of ethics in the boardroom, former Wal-Mart director Don
Soderquist, is taking his message on the road. Coinciding with the
release of two of his latest works, "The Wal-Mart Way: The Inside
Story of the Success of The World's Largest Company" (Nelson Books)
and soon-to-be-released "Live. Learn. Lead to Make a Difference" (J.
Countryman), Soderquist will be the keynote speaker in New York on May
25, 2005, for The Retail Business Symposium, a one-day leadership
forum hosted by the retail trade organization DSN Retailing Today, a
division of Lebhar-Friedman Inc. His presentation will focus on the
keys to effective leadership.
"Don Soderquist is, and always will be, one of this industry's beacons
of leadership," said DSN Retailing Today editorial director and
associate publisher Tony Lisanti. "For the last two decades, he set
the bar very high and earned the reputation as one of retailing's most
influential and inspiring personalities."
Soderquist, whose last executive role with Wal-Mart was senior vice
chairman before serving as a director through fiscal 2002, currently
serves at the executive in residence of The Soderquist Center for
Leadership and Ethics, an arm of the John Brown University in Siloam
Springs, Arkansas.
As a longstanding proponent of such fundamental corporate principles
as dialogue, diversity and disclosure, Soderquist is considered by
many to be a leader before his time. In an interview in 1998 with DSN
Retailing Today (then known as "Discount Store News") Soderquist said,
"The issue with people is one on one, it's not mass production. The
district manager and regional managers, they all have to be Sam
Waltons out there. ...The leaders of tomorrow need to be better than we
are today, and it is our obligation to prepare them."
In his 20 years with Wal-Mart, Soderquist, who is still very much
involved in the Bentonville retail community, was more than a purveyor
of corporate culture. In addition to leading roles within the areas
of human resources and corporate affairs, Soderquist oversaw many
disciplines throughout his management days with Wal-Mart, including
real estate, information systems, logistics, legal, and loss
prevention, as well as the company's McLane Company division. In
1988, he was named Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer.
This year's Retail Business Symposium, which is an annual event in New
York, brings together leading retail and manufacturing companies with
an agenda that spans a many critical issues, including merchandising
trends that are dominating the industry, case studies from leading
retailers, an economic analysis of the retail sector, international
retail trends, and much more. Joining Soderquist in the lineup will
be senior executives from Best Buy, CompUSA, IKEA, Fresh Direct,
AutoZone and AAFES, among others.
