CASA VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE GOVERNOR'S VICTIM ASSISTANCE AWARD FOR
THEIR WORK ON BEHALF OF MARYLAND'S ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN

TOWSON, MD - April 16, 2007 - Baltimore Maryland's Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers have been selected to
receive a 2007 Governor's Victim Assistance Award in recognition of
their work on behalf of victims of child abuse and neglect. The award
will be presented at a luncheon on Friday May 4, 2007 at the Sheraton
Annapolis Hotel in Annapolis. Forty CASA volunteers, representing more
than 780 volunteers statewide, will attend the luncheon to accept the
award.
According to Susan Burger, Executive Director of CASA of Baltimore,
who nominated the volunteers for the award, "CASA volunteers are
ordinary people who do extraordinary work." Volunteers are
carefully screened and undergo 30 hours of training before being
appointed by Juvenile Court judges to advocate for the best interests
of abused and neglected children. "They are powerful voices for
these children," Burger added.
More than 900 volunteers served as advocates for over 1,300 children
last year. 268 of those children were successfully placed in
permanent homes. Maryland's fourteen CASA programs, operating in
Baltimore City and fourteen counties*, are members of the National
CASA Association. There are 937 CASA programs and more than 50,000
CASA volunteers nationwide.
